Water and Wastewater Utilities (620) 583-6193
The
City of Eureka provides a water and wastewater utility services
to their citizenry. Eureka is also surrounded by numerous
water supply sources, securing Eureka' s water for years
to come. The City currently uses one lake as a primary water
supply with Fall River as a back-up supply. Eureka also
has the capability of using a second Lake for a water supply
should future growth require it. Most of the drainage basin
feeding to the lakes are wide-open pasture land, making
the quality of the water some of the best in Kansas.
Eureka'
s water treatment facility currently distributes an average
of about 600,000 gallons per day, with the capability of
producing 1.3 million gallons per day. The water system
has more than 23 miles of lines that distributes water to
our citizenry and businesses alike. This makes the water
distribution system more than capable of handling any business
that wants to locate in or relocate to Eureka, with additional
room for expansion.
Eureka
is served by a sewer lagoon system. The lagoon system is
rated to handle additional flows that would be created by
any potential businesses. The City of Eureka has been aggressive
in recent years to upgrade the sewer distribution system
and to ensure the longevity of the lagoon system.
Airport (620) 583-7732
The
Eureka Municipal Airport is one of the nicest small airports
in Kansas. Recent State and Federal grant money has secured
the longevity of the concrete runway and promises a more
modernized airport. The City plans the installation of an
Automated Weather Operating System (AWOS) at the airport
within the next couple of years. This will make pilots privy
to a wealth of weather related information at the airport,
which will hopefully increase air traffic. Other plans include
the expansion of our turnarounds and the construction of
new T-hangers for airplane storage within the next few years.
Eureka
Lake (620) 583-5858
Eureka
City Lake is located on the eastern edge of the scenic Flint
Hills. Region in Southeast Kansas. Native tall grass prairie
comprises most of the lake's drainage basin and helps maintain
32-inches of water transparency. The lake is located four
and one-half miles north of the City of Eureka. Construction
of the lake was completed in 1938 by the Works Progress
Administration, Civilian Conservation Corps, and the City
of Eureka. Their craftsmanship is still evident in the native
limestone inlaid dam, spillway, picnic shelters, and entrances.
The lake was constructed for the purpose of flood control,
civic water supply, and recreation. Although Eureka no longer
uses the lake as its primary water supply, it still serves
as water augmentation.
