Eureka Now Has a Curb & Gutter Replacement Program

by Ian Martell

February 13, 2010

The Eureka City Council has approved a Curb and Gutter Replacement program where the City will work together with the homeowner to replace broken or degraded curbing. As there is a limited amount of money allocated to this program, the City will ultimately decide where new curbing will be the most beneficial.  Interested property owners are asked to contact the City if they would like to participate in this program. Please review the specifics below:

CURB AND GUTTER REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

This program is designed to replace the deteriorating curbs and gutters in the City of Eureka.

1. The City would identify deteriorating curbs and gutters and notify interested property owners asking them if they would want to participate in a voluntary replacement program.

2. The City would remove the old curb and gutter at no expense to the property owner.

3. The property owner would pay for materials only after the city has given the property owner a cost on materials. 75% of the property owner’s payment must be made before the project starts and the other 25% upon completion.

4. The City will pay for labor on a linear foot bid from a private contractor who has the expertise to do this type of work.

5. The City will rough grade and shape soil that was dispatched by the curb construction but is not responsible for landscaping or seeding.

6. The City would budget $ 5,000.00 a year for labor. This could possibly mean that not all jobs could be completed in one year.

7. Property owners who pay the 75% deposit up front will be put on a list to have their curb and gutter replaced. Deposit money will be refunded to the property owners if the City can not complete the job in the year the money is paid.

8. The City will not do private sidewalks or drive ways. The property owner may contact private contractors if they want these items replaced.

9. The City will solicit bids from local qualified contractors.

10. The City would furnish a mold for the curb work if the contractor needs one.

11. Estimate that under this program (1 ½) blocks or 450LF could be replaced each   year.
